China Bamboo release a winter anthem set to get us in our feels. ‘Ambivalence (For You)’ is the recent single from the Brighton-based band, made up of four life-long friends, as they storm the scene with their blended brand of ‘Bubblegum-Goth’. With a soundscape sculpted with slapping bass lines and slick guitar riffs, China Bamboo carve out a space unique to them in the electro-pop landscape. Their latest single comes off the back of their debut hit ‘We’ve Disconnected,’ a track rife with slick guitar melodies and a chorus so catchy you’ll be humming it under your mask for days. Whilst being picked up by BBC Introducing, China Bamboo’s debut planted their roots firmly in a rousing realm of artists rising up the ranks this year.
‘Ambivalence (For You)’ speaks on the truth that sometimes the sadness just seems too real and happiness all too fleeting. Yet this track radiates the rich energy of four young musicians with talent pouring out their fingertips - so it’s not all doom and gloom. China Bamboo provide an optimism with the superb use of spacious synths and a drum line that will have your head banging in seconds. The climactic bridge offers up a burst of energy as striking stabs and a defiantly dynamic drum line command us into a space of strength. Having birthed the idea of ‘Ambivalence (For You)’ years ago, lead singer Ruby’s concept was given a new lease of life when bandmate Danny discovered this hidden gem this year; Ruby describes that “Danny’s passion and vision for the song was a turning point.” Whatever led to this single reaching our playlists, we couldn’t be more grateful. Of all the things we’re excited for when this quarantine is over, seeing this track live is at the top of the list.
